For more than twelve years, POZEN has been
committed to developing products that offer innovative solutions to the
unmet needs of patients, including product candidates for the treatment of
migraine and arthritis. In addition to our focus on the treatment of pain
and painful conditions, POZEN is differentiated from other small
pharmaceutical companies by a unique business model, singular innovation,
and exceptional employees who are driven to succeed.
POZEN pioneered the concept
of an outsource drug development company whose products would be marketed by
strong commercial partners. This model allows us to commit our resources to
developing new products instead of funding laboratories, manufacturing
facilities, or commercial infrastructure. By licensing our products to
market leaders, as we’ve done with Treximet™ and PN 400, we’ve
capitalized on the large pharmaceutical companies’ strong relationships with
patients, prescribers and third party payers.
Although one would hope a
small company could successfully streamline its products to full commercial
status, I am certain the model we have chosen to follow better positions our
products to reach their full commercial potential. Instead of
commercializing our innovative products ourselves, we take a royalty on net
sales. As a result cash begins to flow immediately after the product is
launched by our partner and continues for years with no offsetting expense
to POZEN.
The key to POZEN’s success is
innovation. Combining two different pharmacologic agents to provide a
superior outcome for migraine patients may seem obvious today. However,
this exquisite solution to the migraine problem was never suggested until we
developed it and convinced the skeptics through significant clinical
trials. Today, almost anyone you ask will say that dual acting migraine
therapy is a “no brainer”, but this simply was not the case 11 years ago.
It reminds me of the famous saying, “The unfortunate thing about being ahead
of your time is that when people finally realize you were right, they’ll say
it was obvious all along.”
The key to execution is a
solid team. The people who work at POZEN are selected for their ability to
adhere to high standards of performance, their integrity, and their
goal-oriented behavior. No matter how good the plan, one can expect the
unexpected in any drug development program. POZEN employees have
continuously demonstrated their ability to meet drug development challenges
every step of the way. There is no finer example of this than our
successful navigation of the difficult path to the Treximet approval
by the FDA.
We believe Treximet’s
approval and launch by GlaxoSmithKline will be a transformational event for
POZEN. We are one of only a handful of small pharma companies to secure FDA
approval for one of our inventions. As we look forward to the submission
and approval process for our other products, we are confident the advantages
of our business model will become readily apparent to key players in our
industry. Not only will this realization enhance our reputation, but also
our profitability when those products reach the marketplace.
We’re glad you’re interested in taking a look at
POZEN, and perhaps joining us in our journey. The best is yet to come.
